Project Overview

Flux is a decentralized social app designed to replace mindless doomscrolling with intentional, growth-focused content discovery. The platform aims to create a healthier digital experience by emphasizing quality over quantity and fostering meaningful connections.

As the founder and lead designer, I conceptualized Flux to address the growing concerns around social media addiction and its negative impact on mental health. The project began in Summer 2024 and has since evolved from early prototypes to a full-fledged MVP with a dedicated development team.

The Problem

Traditional social media platforms are designed to maximize engagement through endless scrolling, leading to:

  • Increased anxiety and decreased focus
  • Content consumption without retention or growth
  • Algorithmic echo chambers that limit perspective
  • Superficial connections rather than meaningful engagement
  • Addiction-driven design patterns that prioritize time spent over value gained

The Solution

Flux reimagines social media with intentionality at its core:

  • Curated content discovery based on learning goals rather than engagement metrics
  • Decentralized architecture that gives users control over their data and experience
  • Built-in reflection tools that encourage processing information rather than just consuming it
  • Community-driven content curation that reduces algorithmic bias
  • Design patterns that promote healthy usage rather than addiction

Key Features

Flux transforms doomscrolling into intentional growth by combining thoughtful design, decentralized tech, and community-powered curation.

Growth-Driven Feed

Doomscrolling → Development A content experience designed to help you grow, not zone out — powered by a human moderation system focused on productive, insightful content.

Decentralized Architecture

Own your data, shape your experience Built on decentralized architecture using the AT Protocol, Flux gives users full control of their data and personalized feed — no algorithms, no exploitation.

Community-Driven Moderation

Curated by people, not black-boxes Communities moderate and curate what gets surfaced — fostering trust, relevance, and real value over engagement traps.

Design Process

The development of Flux followed a user-centered design approach, with multiple iterations based on feedback and testing.

Research & Discovery

Conducted user interviews and market analysis to identify pain points with existing social platforms and opportunities for innovation.

Emotional Effects of Social Media (User Study) showing high percentages of anxiety (72%), insecurity (64%), FOMO (58%), loneliness (55%), comparison fatigue (47%), and doomscrolling (66%)

Ideation & Prototyping

Developed wireframes and interactive prototypes to test core concepts and user flows.

Outcomes

Flux has evolved from a concept to a working MVP with a dedicated team of developers and designers.

Early user testing has shown promising results, with users reporting increased satisfaction and reduced anxiety compared to traditional social platforms.

The project has garnered interest from the UCLA community and beyond, with potential partnerships in discussion.

Next Steps

Complete the MVP development and launch a closed beta to gather more comprehensive user feedback.

Refine the content discovery algorithm based on user behavior and preferences.

Expand the team to include more developers and community managers.

Secure funding to support continued development and growth.
